Heroes are supposed to be brave, aren't they?

Vetch is training to be a knight in a magical world. But he’s afraid of battle and reluctant to hurt others. He’s kept his fears from his friends, but he knows at some point he’ll be revealed for the coward he is.

Led by a sorcerer, a massive army of men and monsters attack Vetch’s homeland, the land of Ambria. With no idea how far the enemy’s power extends, Vetch struggles against impossible odds to keep himself and those he cares about safe.

In an epic tale of intrigue, magic, love, monsters, and Greek myth, can a sixteen-year-old warrior with a too-gentle heart survive?

Darkest Autumn Ambria Book 1 eBook Audrey Roy Greenfeld Daniel Roy Greenfeld AM Husbandman

What an excellent little find this book is. The Darkest Autumn is the story of squires surviving in the battle to save Ambria. What I really liked about the book is how the author keeps a "grunt's eye view" of the battles. This is not the story of the king or even the knights. It is about the squires who support Sir Donal and the other knights in protecting the kingdom from the Dark Lord and his monstrous legions. I enjoyed the epicness of this story. The author does a good job of combining an epic full of magic and monsters, yet at the same time delivering street-level point of view.

Daniel Roy Greenfield is a terrific writer adept at playing between many characters all at once, yet not confusing the reader as to who is who and where he left off with the character.

Darkest Autumn Ambria Book 1 eBook Audrey Roy Greenfeld Daniel Roy Greenfeld AM Husbandman Reviews

A very imaginative world of strange creatures, magic and lots of fighting. At first, I didn't like the protagonist, a very young man who is a squire. But you really start to feel for him; they way he is scared of fighting and has guilt over having to kill people. In spite of his fears, he does the right thing as much as he can, although sometimes things he does are taken the wrong way. The cliffhanger ending makes me eagerly anticipate the sequel.
Loved the book, can't wait for the next one ♡♡♡
I really enjoyed this book. I'm looking forward to the next installment.
Really enjoyed the whole series. Each book just keeps getting better. Book 5 please!
A promising start to a dark fantasy series. Held back by some issues with pacing and exposition, but still delivers on some very intense action scenes. Looking forward to learning more about the world of Ambria.
This takes me back to the fantasy novels I read and fell in love with growing up. Glad I picked it up and can not wait for the next installment.
Darkest Autumn is a great introduction to the Ambria series, aimed mainly at the YA-market but without really pandering to any audience. It avoids a lot of the fantasy tropes in mass-market fantasy, focusing mainly on several coming-of-age characters without putting the camera on the "heroes" of the world too much.

There's enough combat exposition to enjoy the conflicts (internal and external) without fights dragging on or dwelling in unnecessary gory details. The world-building (geopolitics, class and gender roles) are explored just enough, in service of the characters and their decisions, without bogging down in digressions (c.f. Tolkein...).

It's still clear the authors (caveat I've met him and know of his technical books and work) are finding their voices here, and later books in the series have better dialogue and deeper descriptive text (more show, less tell), but it's worth starting this from the beginning to appreciate the characters' origins.

Comparisons I'd make this isn't a carbon-copy Hero's Journey, at least not yet. Comparable in tone to early Prydain books, though less fanciful (and with a proto-Greek influence rather than Welsh). Comparable in "power level" to some of the Black Company books, though a bit less dark and bleak.

And one selling point from me it makes me want to fire up a new D&D campaign and try to capture the appreciation relatively low-level characters have for any magic they encounter, any better equipment they are gifted or earn, even their social standing and familial structures.
